`Tis the Season...
... To "spruce" up your desktop with some holiday cheer! (And to, apparently, use really bad puns!)
I'll admit that I'm a bit of a scrooge when it comes to the holiday season. I was pretty miffed when I was at the mall on Friday and I could not escape the incessant Christmas music or holiday decorations. It was just Hallowe'en for heck sakes and it isn't even snowing yet! In order to combat my near-fatal case of "the bah-humbugs", I decided to decorate my desktop with some customizable festive cheer using the following 3 (free!) MAC apps. (Thanks to tuaw.com for their article.)
First up is Snö: "... a useless application that makes snow fall over your desktop."
The second, is MacLampsX (similar to the popular Holiday Lights for OS9) which: "... strings rows of Christmas tree bulbs around the edges of your screen."
And last but not least, is X-MasTree 1.3: "A Christmas Tree for your Mac." It's customizable and you can even opt to have the number of days left until Christmas displayed.
The result can look something like this:

Feel free to complete the effect with some winter/Christmas icons. And if my "bah-humbugs" were contagious, perhaps the Not A Merry Christmas icon set is the thing for you.
Update: Just found TreetopLights, by Free Range Mac. It's, basically, MacLamps and X-MasTree combined into one program... and I like it!

Oh my God. I cannot believe it...
I started to read your post and thought, "I'll suggest one or two of my favs for the holidays." You listed the only three I run!!!
Yes, I get all three of these babies going at work all holiday season. Of course, I fiddle with them all the time, trying to "perfect" my snow and tree. I'm never happy with them though; gotta keep fiddling away. No wonder I don't get any work done!
I think I'm gonna fire these babies up on my Mac at work tomorrow. >:-)

Very nice desktop, Christmasey and clean.
For fun, go to http://www.eeggs.com/tree/1141.html
for easter eggs in OS X - some of them look like fun.
Yep, thanks to your post here, I got out the ol' Xmas apps on my Mac at work and fired 'em up. As feared, I spent about an hour trying to get the perfect settings on the snow to go with my tree, which also needed to go with my background.
The only thing I don't like is that I cannot get the snow to go to my second monitor. >:-(
Later,
J
